Building a Support Network

A support network is a group of people in someone’s life who provide emotional and practical help. This group of people help you achieve your personal goals.

Creating a solid support network can be instrumental in navigating life’s challenges and celebrating successes. Whether you’re in a tough season in life or pursing goals, having support can make all the difference. Below, you will find some practical steps to creating cultivating meaningful connections.

Identify Your Needs

It can be very helpful to have a diverse group of people to help with emotional support, professional advice, and even friendship. Figuring out what you are looking for will be very helpful in the process of finding a support network or building upon your already existing network. Consider including family, friends, colleagues, mentors, and other members of your larger community. Each connection can bring their own life experiences, skills, and insight.

Nurture Existing Relationships

As stated, you can include family and friends in your support network – you don’t have to start from scratch. Invest time in those who you think can strength your network through good communication and cultivation.

Be Genuine and Authentic

Authenticity goes a long way with connecting with others. Be open and honest with your support network about challenges your face, emotions, and needs you might have. Express how they can support you – whether that might be regular check-ins, phone calls, coffee, etc. Communication is key.

Join Community Groups

Finding others in your community who have shared interests can be super helpful in finding others to relate to – both online or offline. This could mean therapeutic groups, grief groups, workshops, conferences, fun community events, or recreational sports teams. Social media platforms can also be helpful for finding community groups and events.

Celebrate Successes Together

While support networks can be super helpful when hard times occur. They are also great for celebrating wins – big or small!
