How To Set Healthy Boundaries

Boundary setting. It can sound harsh, but it is oh so necessary.

Boundaries are necessary for maintaining healthy relationships, whether they be with a peer, relative, romantic partner, or business partner. Boundaries help us navigate our relationships by reminding us of our values, roles, and responsibilities.

Below are 3 things to consider related to boundary setting:

YOUR VALUES

Your values system helps you navigate the world. Think about what is important to you in the specified relationship and assess whether this relationship is in alignment with your personal values and beliefs. If it is not, then you can explore a realignment process. This may include having a conversation with the other person or implementing certain measures to regain a sense of peace.

YOUR ROLE

Ask yourself: What is my role in this relationship? Are my behaviors appropriate for this role? Once you understand your role, you can identify when you are operating outside of your role. Additionally, you may realize that your role does not fit your value system.

YOUR RESPONSIBILITIES

Along with your roles come responsibilities. You can then take a look at what responsibilities are expected of said role. You may consider which responsibilities have you taken on that may be outside of your role. Sometimes having few boundaries means that you take on jobs, tasks, emotions, that are not for you to bear. Other times, you may neglect certain responsibilities, which can put a strain on your relationships.

With all of this said, setting healthy boundaries may not be simple. Counseling can provide you with the space to explore your relationships and process where your boundaries lie. If you feel that it is time for you to reassess your boundaries, consider talking this over with a counselor.
